Kenneth Le Riche - New Works

Description

Kenneth's paintings are relatively self-explanatory. They are rooted in the tradition of Western Figurative Painting and he mainly uses oil on canvas. The imagery is representational with some abstract qualities and in terms of process he is predominantly interested in finding a sense of tension that hovers between these two poles. He endeavors to depict the experience of making a drawing or a painting of the subject. This involves a relationship between the motif, the materials used and himself. Narrative also plays a part in the composition and he finds this works most effectively when allowed to be somewhat ambiguous.

“Young Northern British Artists”.

Description

A vibrant exhibition of figurative and narrative art from emerging graduates from the four Scottish Art Schools and featuring new work by international artists and jewellers.
Owner Derek Butter has filtered the very best of the 2010 Graduates Degree Shows emerging from the four major Scottish Art Schools; Edinburgh, Glasgow, Grays School of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone. If you missed the degree shows this is an ideal opportunity to appreciate the high calibre of work being produced in Scotland.
Many of the artists are as yet unknown but have already been chosen for the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries Scotland Exhibition in Spring 2011.
Derek Butter said: “In recent years there has been a large shift towards conceptual art, young artists working in other areas have been largely marginalised in their efforts to find a suitable platform for their work. We hope through Axolotl to help provide this.”
Also featuring a collection of unique jewellery by Jared Sanders exploring themes of love, loss and memory. Taking inspiration from traditional talismanic imagery using eclectic symbolism to illustrate the duality of love.
Exhibition runs 6 – 30 August daily 10-6pm Sunday 12-5pm Free (non ticketed)

Alan Mcgowan - New Work

Description

McGowan’s oils combine brilliant draughtsmanship with the fluid mark-making of life-model sketching. Taking the human figure as his subject, McGowan’s work is firmly rooted in the great figure painting style of the High Renaissance, while at the same time unmistakenly modern and novel.

Katie Cooke - Balancing Act

Description

Cooke presents a series of hauntingly beautiful photographs. Taking herself as the subject and utilising pin-hole photography with long exposures the series focuses on various aspects of the subject attempting to hold a pose. The series is given added poignancy by the gradual reveal of the mental and physical challenge that this entailed, as Cooke put it, “the exposures were timed on a very simple basis; how long could I stand or balance?”
