Freak Show opening

With Jeanie Laub's subtle creepy boxes, surreal paintings and sketchy drawings and Claire McGee's enormous dark canvases we opened our doors of Freak Show to the public for the first time on the 24th of September 2010.
Many visitors have been found with their noses deep in the boxes of found objects made by Jeanie and been astounded by the sheer size of Claire's carnival influenced paintings. Both artists attended the preview on the opening night to welcome the guests and show them their work.
We also had a great review in the Sunday Herald that week promoting the show as a "must see".

Fringe Venue 209 Opens with the Young (North) British Artists

On Friday night we became Venue 209 in the Fringe Festival. We opened the doors and the corks at 7pm and the turnout was our busiest yet. There was a great buzz surrounding the fact that the 16 artists that were exhibiting, were all either recent graduates or emerging Scottish talent. Figurative artists are relatively overlooked in Edinburgh so it was exciting to have such a big celebration of this genre. The prosecco flowed and the music blared a sight you wouldn't have seen on Dundas Street in the past but hopefully you'll see a lot more of in the future. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported us and made the evening so unforgettable.

Balancing Act talk at Axolotl gallery

Katie Cooke's talk on Balacing Act

The uber talented Katie Cooke gave a talk on her work processes and her deeply personal journey in creating her series of spell binding photographs "Balancing Act" on 3rd of July. Some of the visitors were also professional photographers and a discussion over technology verses pin-hole technique ensued. We all wish Katie the best of luck with her finally being recognized for her beautiful work in her homeland of Scotland.

Opening Night

Fabulous opening night – in fact we had so much fun we did it twice on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th February. Excellent turn out both nights and much fizz was consumed.

Kirsty Whitens work was very well received with her limited edition print run of “Flower Monkey” almost selling out. Sarah Wilson’s circus series proved very popular with “Lion Tamer” being sold in the first hour.

Life, Death and Sex

The opening exhibition, “Life, Death and Sex” will feature four emerging Scottish artists: Christine Clarke, Sarah Green, Kirsty Whiten and Sarah Wilson.

Speaking about the opening, gallery owner Derek Butter stated, “We are very excited about the show and to be opening a new venue for contemporary art in Edinburgh. We feel that at the moment, whereas the city is well served in some areas, such as conceptual art and contemporary art from established names, there is little opportunity for newer artists to showcase their talents.”
